Deer Park is a 800 hectare park easily accessed by road from the Kelvin Heights Peninsula road. NZ$20 entrance per car is paid at gate. You then just drive yourself at your own pace, stopping where and when you like. Regular Coach Tours also run. The park is 550m above Queenstown, so the views are breathtaking.
There are many types of animal here apart from Deer. They all roam freely: - Bison, Llama, Goats, supremely shaggy Himalayan Thar, Miniature Horses, Sheep, Donkeys and Highland Cattle. Many animals can be hand fed. Nut tins and animal nuts are available at the nut dispensers.
Near the top is an easy 20 minute walk starting near the old Korean Prison built for a movie set back in 1986. Go here to see map of Deer Park showing locations of all attractions including the prison. This walk takes you past several lakes and up to the top for the ultimate view over Queenstown and surroundings. This walk also makes for some wonderful picnic sites looking out in any direction 360 degrees. Views of The Remarkables ranges, Frankton and Airport, and back to Queenstown.
An information pamphlet is available at the entrance. This is very informative, not only telling about all the different animals, but explaining where all the different filming sites were for The Lord of the Rings movie. These filming sites were mostly used in the second film; The Two Towers.
